Where We Are
  Costa Rica

Our Vision: Costa Ricans passing the skills of "feeling peace" and "speaking peace" from generation to generation.

This world of increasing violence is now impacting the peaceful society of Costa Rica. To counteract this destructive trend, the two Costa Rican school children that you see here are learning how to "feel peace" and "speak peace". They are learning these skills from their teacher Daisy Fallas (pictured above left). She is part of an "army" of peace volunteers led by Rita Marie Johnson (shown above right). Together, they and dozens of other volunteers make up...

The Peace Army
of Costa Rica, a project of the Rasur Foundation

Welcome to the Peace Army Website

The Peace Army is for everyone and against no one. It is not associated with any political party, religion, or group but embraces people from all walks of life, including those in the military. The core value of the Peace Army is compassionate connection with ourselves and others.

We are implementing a social and emotional skills-based program in schools through training teachers in two highly effective methods, which we discovered are enhanced when used together. The teachers then offer this synergistic combination of methods to their students:

  • Skill of “Feeling peace using the Institute of HeartMath’s Freeze-Framer, a scientifically-validated method of building emotional intelligence, taught through verbal instruction. This method is also taught through software, with a finger sensor for monitoring heart rhythms, which acts as a guide to aligning the activity of the brain and the heart. As a result, individuals improve emotional stability and anger management while lowering test anxiety, resulting in higher test scores.
  • Skill of “Speaking peace” using Nonviolent Communication, developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication in 1984. This method, now taught in over 30 countries, has stood the test of time and cross-cultural effectiveness.

In this website, we invite peacemakers everywhere to join us in the development of a citizenry that embodies peace, thereby creating a Costa Rican model of human progress. We are relying on the longing for peace of people everywhere to help us create a countrywide model of a lasting culture of peace. We believe, of all countries, Costa Rica has the best chance of achieving this vision.
