The Peace Army of Costa Rica:
Teaching “feeling peace” and “speaking peace”

The Challenge:

The schools and overall society of peaceful Costa Rica are beginning to experience the same increase in violence that is being seen throughout the world.

The Vision:

We hold a vision of Costa Ricans passing on the skills of peace from one generation to the next.

"Sostenemos la vision de que los costarricenses puedan heredar las destrezas de la paz de generacion en generacion."

The Core Value:

Our core value is compassionate connection with ourselves and others.

The Mission and the Methodology:

The Peace Army is implementing a social and emotional skills-based program in schools through training teachers in two highly effective methods. Then the teachers offer these two methods to their students:

  • “Feeling peace using the Institute of HeartMath’s Freeze Framer, a scientifically-validated method of building emotional intelligence. This method is also taught through software, with a finger sensor for monitoring heart rhythms, which guides children in aligning the activity of the brain and the heart. As a result, students improve emotional stability, impulse control and anger management, and lower their test anxiety resulting in higher test scores.
  • “Speaking peace” using Nonviolent Communication, developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication in 1984. This method, now taught in over 30 countries, has stood the test of time and cross-cultural effectiveness.

After teachers are trained, they teach these two methods to students, parents and community members.

*Please Note: Nonviolent Communicationsm was originated by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication. The Peace Army is not affiliated with CNVC other than as practitioners of the ideas and techniques that Dr. Rosenberg has developed. Additional information about Nonviolent Communication can be found at http://www.cnvc.org.
